Payments & practical city tips

Payments, local currency, electricity, and safety at a glance.

  • Contactless cards & minimal cash

Contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and smartwatches are widely accepted across Rio, including beach kiosks and taxis. Carry only a little cash for contingencies.

  • What is PIX?

Merchants often ask “É no Pix?”. PIX is Brazil’s instant payment network. International visitors may use cross-border apps such as Wise or Nomad to scan and pay Brazilian PIX QR codes.

  • Electricity & plugs

Rio uses 110V/127V at 60Hz and the three-pin Type N outlet. Bring an adapter for US flat pins or European round pins.

  • Neighborhood safety & highlights

Urca is one of Rio’s calmest districts. Keep phones discreet on busy streets and use rideshares late at night. Visit Praia Vermelha, Pista Cláudio Coutinho, and Mureta da Urca.
